“My mom was a straight up hard-ass (for lack of a better term) growing up. It was rough being the son of a nurse—no sick days unless I was bleeding, vomiting, or a bone was sticking out of my arm. So when I finally picked up the violin my mom pulled out her guns and made sure I spent every bit of free time practicing. By the time I was in middle school I didn’t even want to play anymore, being a nerdy orchestra kid was severely slowing down my social life, or so I thought. But my mom wouldn’t take no for an answer, and she insisted on sending me to private lessons and drove me there every day after school.
